Hallo,
ich bin Gerrit und für mich geht ein Traum in Erfüllung. Ich werde ab August 2016 die Chance haben in den USA zu studieren, genauer am renommierten Haverford College in der nähe von Philadelphia.
Seit etwa zwei Jahren verfolge ich diese Ziel und jetzt wird es endlich wahr, was dafür alles notwendig war, dazu habe ich euch hier schon was geschrieben.
Ich komme aus Mönchengladbach einer kleineren Großstadt in Nordrhein-Westfalen, im äußersten Westen Deutschlands. 2015 habe ich mein Abitur am Hugo-Junkers-Gymnasium gemacht, da war schon klar, dass ich nicht unmittelbar mit dem Studium in den USA anfangen könnte. Zunächst musste ich all diese Test hinter mich bringen und mich bewerben. Deshalb habe ich mich neben der Testvorbereitung für ein Praktikum im Forschungszentrum Jülich im Institut für Kernphysik entschieden.
Nach sechs Monaten Praktikum hat man man mir dann auch prompt eine Stelle für weitere sechs Monate angeboten. Heute (28.07.16) ist mein vorletzter Tag im Forschungszentrum und ich weiß jetzt schon, das ich wohl eines Tages zurückkehren werde, sei es als Doktorand, als Postdoc oder vielleicht auch schon früher für ein weiteres Praktikum. Ich hatte hier unheimlich viel Spaß und habe so immens viel gelernt, dass ich allen heir nur dankbar sein kann für die Art und Weise wie sie mich aufgenommen haben und dafür, dass sie ihr riesiges Wissen mit mir geteilt haben. Besonderen Dank an Ralf und Raimund!
Wenn es mal weniger akademisch zugeht, dann findet man mich oft auf den Hockeyplätzen Europas. Ich spiele seit ich etwa fünf Jahre alt bin Feldhockey, als Spieler habe ich es jedoch nie wirklich zu etwas gebracht. Als Schiedsrichter bin ich hingegen wohl auf einem ganz guten Weg. Mein letztes Turnier vor meiner Abreise in die USA war wohl auch mein größtes. Ich war erst letzte Woche zum U16 Sechs-Nationen-Turnier in Antwerpen (Belgien) nominiert, eine tolle Erfahrung mit einen Team internationaler Schiedsrichter die wohl besten U16-Teams Europas zu pfeifen. Ich werde versuchen beim Pfeifen in den USA am Ball zu bleiben und wer weiß, vielleicht finde ich ja auch über die USA den Weg auf die große internationale Hockeybühne.

I am Gerrit and a dream comes true for me. Starting in August 2016 I will have the chance to study in the US, more precisely at the prestigious Haverford College close to Philadelphia. I have been on this for about two years, you can read about what I needed to do on my way here.
I am from Mönchengladbach a small city in North Rhein-Westphalia, in the very west of Germany. In 2015 I graduated with my Abitur from the Hugo-Junkers-Gymansium, at that time I already knew that I wouldn't be able to start studying in the US right away. I had to take all the test and apply first, thus I decided to do an internship at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the Scientific Research Center Jülich while preparing for the standardized test.
After six months of internship I was offered a job for another six months in Jülich. Today (07/28/16) is my second last day at the institute, but I know that I will return some day maybe as a PhD student or as a postdoc or even earlier for another internship. I had a lot of fun here and have learned so much. I'd like to thank all the people here for the way in which they included me and for sharing their enormous knowledge with me. Special thanks to Ralf and Raimund!
When I am not engaged academically you can probably find me on the field hockey pitches of Europe. I have been playing field hockey since I was about five years old, as an player I didn't achieve any greater success though. However, as an umpire I am on a good path. My last tournament before my journey to the US was probably also my most important tournament. Just last week I was appointed to the U16 Six-Nations-Tournament in Antwerp (Belgium); it was a great experience to umpire the best U16-teams of Europe together with an international team of umpires. I will try to keep umpiring in the US and who knows, maybe I will find the way into international hockey umpiring via the USA.
