first college essay and physics lab

Ich hatte nicht den geringsten Schimmer! Nicht den geringsten Schimmer, was mein Prof. im Writing Program (ein Kurs der eine Einführung in akademisches Schreiben geben soll und für alle Freshman hier in Haverford Pflicht ist) von mir wollte, als sie meine ersten beiden Entwürfe des ersten Essays auseinandernahm. Ich hatte eine ganze menge Zeit investiert und den Essay zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits zwei mal neu geschrieben, aber irgendwie schien es nicht auch nur annähernd mit dem übereinzustimmen, was gefordert wurde. Meine Rettung: Das Writing Center, einen weitere Haverford Institution. Ich wüsste nicht was ich ohne diese Hilfe gemacht hätte. Der Essay war dann gestern schließlich in finaler Form fällig und irgendwie hatte ich es dann mit viel “Man könnte das auch so aufziehen...“ und “Vielleicht solltest du ... mit einbeziehen“ vom Writing Center es geschafft etwas zu Stande zu bringe, dass hoffentlich dann doch irgendwie die Aufgabenstellung erfüllt.
Aber meine Woche war natürlich nicht nur Essay-Schreiben. Da wäre noch das erste Physik Lab, wir sollten Schwingung eines Pendels untersuchen. Mir kam hier nicht nur zu gute, dass ich im Prinzip die Lösungen bereits kannte (Danke Herr Reese!), sondern auch das vergangene Jahr im Forschungszentrum, in dem ich viel über Datenauswertung, Fitting und Messfehler gelernt habe (Danke Ralf und Raimund!). Mit dem Glück wirklich sauberer Messwerte, war ich somit ohne weiteres in der Lage die Theorie relativ zweifelsfrei zu bestätigen.
Auch Hockey stand natürlich wieder auf dem Plan und das mit den geteilten Woche scheint sich fortzusetzen. Das Spiel am Mittwoch konnten wir recht klar mit 5-0 für uns entscheiden, aber heute (Samstag) mussten wir uns wiedermal geschlagen geben. Erneut kam die Aufholjagd in der zweiten Hälfte zu spät und aus einem 2-0 wurde nur noch ein 2-1. Gerade sitze ich mit dem Team im Bus auf dem Rückweg von Dickinson College.
Kopf hoch, das nächste Spiel steht schon Mittwoch vor der Tür. Übrigens, für alle, die mich gerne an der Seitenlinie verzweifeln sehen möchten, gibt's online meistens einen Livestream.

I had no idea! No idea, what my Prof. in the Writing Program (a course that is supposed to introduce students to academic writing and is mandatory for all freshman) asked me to do, when she picked apart my first two drafts of the first essay. I had invested a lot of time and rewritten the whole essay twice already, but it still seemed to fail in meeting the task. My Rescue: The Writing Center, another Haverford Institution. I don't know what I'd have done without that support. The essay finally was due yesterday and with a lot of "Why don't you approach it that way..." and "You might wanna consider..." from the Writing Center, I had somehow managed to come up with a essay that is hopefully more towards what is being expected.
However, my week obviously didn't only consist of essay writing. There was also my first physics lab, in which we were asked to investigate the oscillation of a pendulum. I didn't only benefit from the fact, that I basically already knew the solution (Thanks to Mr. Reese), but also the past year in the Research Center, where I learned a lot about data analysis, fitting and measurement errors (Thanks to Ralf und Raimud!). After luckily gathering pretty clean measured data, it wasn't a major problem to confirm the theory.
Field hockey was on the schedule for this week again, and the issue with splitting the weeks seems to become a unfortunate trend. After a clear win on Wednesday, we weren't able to keep a clean record for this week again, falling to Dickinson College today (Saturday). Again our comeback in the second half started too late and we didn't quite manage to turn the game, closing down an initial 2-0 to a 2-1. At the moment I am on the way back from Dickinson.
