Science! Please!

I felt like I needed to take a stand on something that has been bothering me greatly and most recently came back up in an interview with a German politician (Alexander Gauland). Mr. Gauland said: “I don’t believe that that humans contribute much [to climate change].” I have tried to keep these posts unpolitical and I intend to keep it that way. This is not about politics it’s about science. I frankly don’t care who says these things and the general theme applies to the other side of the political spectrum when it comes to GMOs or nuclear power, but I will pick this as an example. When Trump says “I am not a believer in man-made climate change” or Scott Pruitt (former director of the Environmental Protection Agency) claims “I would not agree that it’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see”, then my first thoughts are: 1) Quite frankly, it is completely irrelevant what you believe. If I believe that the earth is flat that doesn’t make that a fact (I am presuming that non of my friends who are going to read this belief the earth is actually flat) 2) How are you even qualified to make any claims about that? Trump is a business man with no scientific background, Scott Pruitt used to be the Oklahoma state attorney and Alexander Gauland is a lawyer by training. 3) How dare you...insult the work of thousands of scientists who have devoted their lives to the subject, who spend years in college and graduate school to learn the tools to make evidence based claims about these kind of things. I am not even going to get into what’s the truth and what’s not. The important thing is that 97% of peer reviewed journal articles that expressed an opinion agree that there is anthropogenic climate change (see here for a quantitative statistical analysis).

I spend the past three years at research institutions in the US, Germany and most recently the UK. I worked with people who have devoted their lifes to science and I am hoping to one day become one of them. I admit non of my experience is in the field of climate science but I have no reason to belief that people there are less determined and thorough than in physics. The past two and a half months I worked at Imperial College London on cosmological modeling. I learned a great deal and I hope I can make a tiny contribution to the field. My project focused on the so called kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in the presence of ultra-light Axion dark matter. It is at this point completely irrelevant what that means, but I can only imagine what it would be like if tomorrow a random person without any background in cosmology and without justification would walk up to me an tell me that they don’t believe my results (granted that is highly unlikely because I doubt any random person would care) and it gets even better, instead of believing me who has invested so much time and thought into the problem, people would actually believe that random person. What does that say about how they value science, the commitment and the time of the scientists? This is what happens to people in climate science on a daily basis. Why spend a decade in college and gradschool if people are not going to value the sacrifice that comes with it?

If I go to the doctor and tell him I believe I have cancer because I coughed then that’s about as good as Trump saying there can’t be an increase in global temperatures because it is snowing in Texas. I would really hope for the doctor to be like: “Well, I will check but my hypothesis is that you have a cold.” If the doctor then after thorough investigation with the skills that they learned in medical school arrives at the conclusion that it is in fact a cold I hope I will receive a cold medicine from the pharmacy and not chemo therapy. If I go to the tailor and insist that my waist is 90cm even though they measure 95cm exactly the way they learned to do it I don’t have to be surprised if the suit does not fit. The only difference is that if people insist that there is no climate change against the advice of professionals then, instead of wasting over $1000 on a suit that doesn’t fit or getting chemo therapy that I didn’t need, we might actually make the planet uninhabitable for live as we know it and thereby cause the next wave of mass extinction.

Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass ich zu etwas Stellung beziehen wollte was mich sehr geärgert hat und kürzlich in einem Interview mit Alexander Gauland wieder aufkam. Herr Gauland sagte: “Ich glaube nicht, dass der Mensch [zum Klimawandel] viel beiträgt.” Ich habe versucht diese Posts unpolitisch zu halten und werde das auch weiterhin tun. Es geht hier nicht um Politik sondern um Wissenschaft. Es ist mir ehrlich gesagt egal, wer diese Dinge sagt und das kann die andere Seite des politischen Spektrums genauso gut, wenn es um GVO oder Atomkraft geht. Wenn Trump sagt "Ich glaube nicht an den von Menschen verursachten Klimawandel" oder Scott Pruitt (ehemaliger Direktor der Environmental Protection Agency) behauptet "Ich würde nicht zustimmen, dass dies ein Hauptbeitrag zur globalen Erwärmung ist, die wir sehen", dann sind meine ersten Gedanken: 1) Ehrlich gesagt, ist es völlig irrelevant, was Sie glauben. Wenn ich glaube, dass die Erde flach ist, macht das das nicht zu einer Tatsache (ich nehme an, dass keiner meiner Freunde, die das hier lesen werden glauben, dass die Erde tatsächlich flach ist) 2) Wie sind Sie überhaupt qualifiziert, irgendwelche Aussagen dazu zu treffen? Trump ist ein Geschäftsmann ohne wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund, Scott Pruitt war der Generalstaatsanwalt von Oklahoma und Alexander Gauland ist ein Anwalt. 3) Wie kommst du dazu ... die Arbeit von Tausenden von Wissenschaftlern zu beleidigen, die ihr Leben dem Thema gewidmet haben, die Jahre an Univeritäten verbringen und die Werkzeuge lernen, um Aussagen über solche Dinge basieren auf Daten und Fakten zu machen. Ich werde nicht einmal darauf eingehen, was die Wahrheit ist und was nicht. Wichtig ist, dass 97% referierten wissenschaftlichen Artikel, die sich dazu äußerten, der Meinung sind, dass es einen anthropogenen Klimawandel gibt (siehe hier für eine quantitative statistische Analyse).

Ich habe die letzten drei Jahre in Forschungseinrichtungen in den USA, Deutschland und zuletzt in Großbritannien verbracht. Ich habe mit Menschen zusammengearbeitet, die ihr Leben der Wissenschaft gewidmet haben, und ich hoffe, eines Tages einer von ihnen zu werden. Ich gebe zu, dass meine Erfahrung nicht im Bereich der Klimawissenschaft liegt, aber ich habe keinen Grund zu der Annahme, dass die Menschen dort weniger entschlossen und gründlich sind als in der Physik. In den letzten zweieinhalb Monaten habe ich am Imperial College London an kosmologischen Modellen gearbeitet. Ich habe viel gelernt und hoffe, dass ich einen kleinen Beitrag auf diesem Gebiet leisten kann. Mein Projekt konzentrierte sich auf den so genannten kinetischen Sunyaev-Zeldovich-Effekt in der Gegenwart von ultraleichten Axions. Es ist an dieser Stelle völlig irrelevant, was das bedeutet, aber ich kann mir nur vorstellen, wie es wäre, wenn morgen eine beliebige Person ohne Hintergrund in Kosmologie und ohne Rechtfertigung zu mir käme und mir sagen würde, dass sie meinen Ergebnissen nicht glaubt (das ist sehr unwahrscheinlich, da ich bezweifle, dass eine beliebige Person daran interessiert ist) und es wird noch besser, die Leute würden dieser zufällige Person tatsächlich Glauben schenken und das obwohl ich so viel Zeit und Gedanken in das Problem investiert hätte. Was sagt das darüber aus, wie Menschen die Wissenschaft, das Engagement und die Zeit der Wissenschaftler wertschätzen? In den Klimawissenschaften passiert das nahezu täglich. Warum sollte man ein Jahrzehnt in der Uni verbringen, wenn es doch keiner wertschätzt?

Wenn ich zum Arzt gehe und sage, dass ich glaube, dass ich Krebs habe, weil ich huste, dann ist das ungefähr so gut wie Trump, der behauptet es könne keine Zunahme der globalen Temperaturen geben, weil es in Texas schneie. Ich würde wirklich hoffen, dass der Arzt erstmal sagt: "Nun, ich werde das überprüfen, aber meine Hypothese ist, dass Sie eine Erkältung haben." Wenn der Arzt dann nach eingehender Untersuchung mit den Fähigkeiten, die er im Medizinstudium gelernt hat zu dem Schluss kommt, dass es ist in der Tat eine Erkältung ist hoffe ich, dass ich eine Erkältungsmedizin aus der Apotheke bekomme und nicht Chemotherapie. Wenn ich zum Schneider gehe und darauf beharre, dass meine Taille 90cm weit ist, obwohl der Schneider 95cm misst, muss ich mich nicht wundern, wenn der Anzug nicht passt. Der Unterschied ist, anstatt mehr als 1000 Dollar für einen Anzug zu verschwenden, der nicht passt oder eine Chemotherapie zu erhalt, die ich nicht brauche, könnten wir diesen Planeten unbewohnbar machen für alles Leben so wie wir es kennen und damit die nächste Welle des Aussterbens verursachen.

It's been a long time!

Es tut mir leid, dass ich so lange nichts von mir habe hören lassen. Ich habe mich entscheiden das hier mal wieder aufleben zu lassen. Inzwischen bin ich schon durch mein zweites Jahr. Damit ist dann auch die Hälfte meiner Zeit in Haverford schon um. Eine Menge ist seitdem passiert, viel zu viel um es hier alles aufzuzählen, daher werde ich mich auf die etwas größeren Geschichten beschränken.

Im May war ich im Rahmen des Astronomieprojekts an dem ich schon seit längeren arbeite in Chile. Zusammen mit meinem Professor habe ich dort das Teleskop ACT (Atacama Cosmology Telescope) mit dessen Daten wir überwiegend arbeiten besucht. Es blieb allerdings auch Zeit für ein bisschen Tourismus und es sind einige wirklich besondere Fotos entstanden. Hier gehts zu den Bildern.

Aktuelle bin ich in London, wo ich am Imperial College am sog. "kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect" forsche. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Verschiebung in Spektrum des kosmischen Mikrowelle Hintergrunds hervorgerufen durch die Streuung von Photonen an der Materie im Universum. Wenn sich dieses Projekt als vielversprechend herausstellt, wird sich daraus möglicherweise meine Bachelorarbeit entwickeln. Neben meinem eigenen Projekt habe ich außerdem nahezu jeden Tag die Möglichkeit in Vorträgen und Diskussion von die Arbeit anderer Forscher zu hören. Hier gibt auch einen Artikel von Haverford über meine Arbeit.

Auch in Sachen Kurse war das vergangene Semester äußerst spannend. Computational Physics war definitiv ein Highlight unter all meinen Kursen bisher. Auch mit meinen anderen Kursen bin ich überaus zufrieden und freue mich auf weitere interessante Aufgaben in den nächsten zwei Jahren. Neben meinen eigenen Kursen durfte ich auch als TA (Teaching Assitant) für einen Kurs zum Einstieg in Programmierung mit Schwerpunkt Physik arbeiten. Ich freue mich schon darauf in diesem oder ähnlichen Kursen auch nächstes Jahr wieder helfen zu können.

Leider konnte ich auf Grund der vielen Reisen dieses Jahr nicht so viel Zeit in Deutschland verbringen, aber ich wollte einfach keine der außergewöhnlichen Möglichkeiten, die mir geboten worden auslassen.

I am sorry that you haven't heard from me in so long. I have decided to let this come alive again. Meanwhile I am already through my second year. Meaning, half of my time in Haverford is already over. A lot has happened since then, far too much to list it all here, so I'll limit myself to the slightly larger stories.

In May I traveled to Chile as part of the Astronomy project I have been working on for a while. Together with my professor, I visited the telescope ACT (Atacama Cosmology Telescope) whose data we mainly work with. However, there was also time for a bit of tourism and I took some really special photos. Click here for the pictures.

I am currently in London, where I am doing research at Imperial College on the so called "kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect". This is a shift in the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background caused by the scattering of photons off the matter in the universe. If this project turns out to be promising, it may develop into my bachelor thesis. In addition to my own project, I ample opportunity to hear about other people's research in talks and discussion. Also in terms of courses the past semester was extremely exciting. Computational Physics was definitely a highlight among all my courses so far. I am also very happy with my other courses and looking forward to more interesting tasks in the next two years. In addition to my own courses, I also had the chance to serve as a teaching assistant for a introduction to programming course with focus on physics. I am already looking forward to helping out in this course or similar ones next year.

Due to the many trips this year I wasn't able to spend as much time in Germany as I would have liked to, but I just did not want to miss any of these extraordinary opportunities.

Fall Break is here!

Und schon sind wieder Ferien. Wobei von 'schon' eigentlich keine Rede sein kann, dann ich bin jetzt schon fast zwei Monate wieder zurück. Ich weiß, ich war etwas unbeständig mit meinen Posts, aber meine Professoren, Hockey und nicht zuletzt meine Freundin haben mich doch ganz schon auf trapp gehalten. Jetzt sind Herbstferien und ich habe endlich Zeit gefunden euch wieder auf den neusten Stand zu bringen.

Ein Überblick:

Hockey: Wir hatten einen sehr starken Start in die Saison, fünf Siege in Folge. Dann leider einen kleinen Einbruch mit nur einem Sieg aus sechs Spielen und zuletzt wieder eine Sieg. Wir hatten leider zwischendurch etwas den Faden verloren, aber ich hoffe das wir nun wieder auf die richtige Spur kommen. Ich freue mich auf jeden Fall darauf die Saison doch noch zu einem halbwegs erfolgreichen Ende zu bringen. Diese Woche hatte wir ausnahmsweise zwei Freie Tage, gestern und heute, da wir am Mittwoch Spielfrei haben. Das heißt von morgen an vier Trainingstage und dann top vorbereitet ins Spiel am Samstag gehen.

Studium: Alles geht seinen Gang, ich bin so langsam in einem gewissen Rhythmus angelangt. Anfang des Semesters herrschte noch etwas Unklarheit ob welcher Sprache ich denn belegen sollte. Es stellte sich aber schnell heraus, dass mein Latein doch sehr rostig war und zusammen mit meinen anderen Kursen einfach nicht zu schaffen gewesen wäre. Also, den etwas weniger zeitaufwendigen Weg gehen und doch Deutsch belegen. Natürlich nicht Deutsch für Einsteiger und auch nicht für Fortgeschrittene, es soll schließlich schon einen gewissen Lerneffekt haben, sondern einen Kurs mit dem Schwerpunkt Nationalismus in Europa und Afrika. Zudem, zweimal Mathe - Lineare Algebra und Diskrete Mathematik - ersteres für Physik und letzteres für Informatik und außerdem Physik mit Schwerpunkt Wellen und Schwingungen als Vorbereitung auf Quantenmechanik. Dazu natürlich das entsprechende Physik Praktikum. Bisher läuft alles nach Plan, auch wenn es eine Menge Arbeit ist.

Forschung: Ich arbeite auch dieses Semester weiter an dem Astroprojekt, dass ich letztes Frühjahr begonnen habe. Anfang diesen Semesters bekamen wir auch endlich einen Teil der Daten, auf die wir so lange gewartet hatten. Leider scheinen dieses immernoch Unregelmäßigkeiten aufzuweisen, so dass wir auf den nächsten, überarbeiteten Export warten müssen. Diese Zeit lässt sich aber produktiv nutzen um verscheiden Veröffentlichungen auf den Weg zu bringen. Das beinhaltet, Texte in LATEX (einem wissenschaftlichen Layout und Typsetting Format) Schriftsetzen und diverse Referenzen sammeln. Außerdem warten wir zur Zeit auf die Daten um dem finalen Ziel unsere Arbeit näher zu kommen vom Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). Darüber hinaus könnte ich nächsten Sommer möglicherweise selbst nach Chile fliegen um das Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) um das sich der größte Teil unsere Arbeit dreht von nahem zu sehen.

Ausblick:

In dieser Saison liegen noch mindestens drei Spiele vor uns, die wir auf jeden Fall gewinnen wollen. Danach wird es wohl etwas ruhiger werden und ich werde etwas mehr Zeit in die Forschung investieren können. Ich hoffe ein zusätzliches Projekt in Theoretischer Physik beginnen zu können, um eine Blick in mehr verschieden Felder gewinnen zu können.

In der unmittelbaren Zukunft, genauer nächsten Sonntag, kriege ich endlich mal wieder auf Besuch aus Europa. Russel ist mal wieder beruflich diesseits des großen Teichs und kommt mich für einen Tag aus New York besuchen. Ich freu mich auf einen entspannten Tag an dem ausnahmsweise mein Akzent nicht der Interessanteste im Raum ist.

Das soll es wiedermal gewesen sein. Ich werde diesmal gar nicht erst versprechen häufiger zu schreiben, denn daran halte ich mich sowieso nicht.

Already on break again. Although 'already' is an understatement, since I have been back for almost two months. I know I was a bit unstable with my posts, but my professors, hockey and last but not least my girlfriend kept me busy. We are on fall break now and I found time to bring you all up to speed.

An overview:

Hockey: We had a very strong start into the season, five wins in a row. Then, unfortunately a small break with just one win in six games and most recently a victory again. We had unfortunately lost the touch for some time, but I hope that we are back on the right track. I am definitely looking forward to bringing the season to a successful end. This week, we had two days off, yesterday and today, as we will not be playing on Wednesday. That four practices from tomorrow on and then going well prepared into Saturday's game.

Studies: I'm slowly establishing at a certain rhythm. At the beginning of the semester there was still some confusion as to which language I was going to take. However, it soon became apparent that my Latin was very rusty and I could not handle that course together with my other courses. So, the somewhat less time-consuming way to go was to take German. Of course, not German for beginners or advanced German but a course with a focus on nationalism in Europe and Africa. Moreover, two math - linear algebra and discrete mathematics - the former for physics and the latter for computer science and additionally physics with a focus on waves and oscillations as a preparation for quantum mechanics. And, of course, the corresponding physics lab. So far everything is going according to plan, even though it is a lot of work.

Research: I am also continuing the astro project I started last spring. At the beginning of this semester, we finally got some of the data that we had been waiting for. Unfortunately, it still seems to have irregularities, so we will need to wait for the next, revised export. We are using the time productively though to get various publications on their way. This involves typsetting texts in LATEX (a scientific layout and typsetting format) and collecting various references. In addition, we are currently awaiting the data for our final goal, to compare our current results to the Atacama Large Millimeter / Submillimeter Array (ALMA). I might also be able to fly to Chile next summer to see the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) on which most of our work is focusing.

Outlook:

This season we have at least three games left which we want to win. After that, I will probably be able to invest a little more time into my research. I hope to be able to start an additional project in theoretical physics in order to gain insight into even more areas of research.

In the immediate future, more precisely next Sunday, I will finally get a visiter from Europe. Russel is once again professionally on the other side of the big pond and will visit me for one day from New York. I'm looking forward to a nice day on which my accent is not the most interesting one in the room.

That should be it again. I will not even promise to write more frequently this time, because I know that will fail anyways.

Let's start season two!

Ich weiß ich habe mich seit Längerem nicht mehr gemeldet, aber jetzt da das Semester am Dienstag wieder startet werde ich das Schreiben wieder aufnehmen. Der Sommer lief soweit sehr gut. Ich war zurück im Forschungszentrum in Jülich. Die Arbeit hat wieder Spaß gemacht, auch wenn die Experimente nicht so erfolgreich verliefen wie ich es mir gewünscht hätte. Nichtsdestotrotz, habe ich wieder eine Menge gelernt und planen schon nächstes Jahr zurück zu kommen.

Lightshow Parliament Hill, Ottawa

Was war sonst noch diesen Sommer? Rylee war zwischendurch für 10 Tage zu Besuch. Wir hatten eine Gute Zeit in Deutschland und den Niederlanden mit einigen Freunden von zuhause. Außerdem habe ich mit meinen Eltern eine kleine Rundreise durch den Nordosten der USA und Kanada gemacht. Dabei haben wir einige wirklich sehenswerte Orte angesteuert. Ein Highlight war sicherlich die Lichtshow am Parlamentsgebäude in Ottawa.

Haverford Field Hockey, Class of 2020

Nun bin ich seit ziemlich genau zwei Wochen zurück in Haverford. Die Vorlesungen haben noch nicht begonnen, aber die Saisonvorbereitung mit dem Hockey Team war schon stressig und Zeitraubend genug. Die harte Arbeit hat sich auch schon bezahlt gemacht, indem wir am vergangen Freitag das vor der Saison auf #18 gesetzte Team von Alvernia 2-0 nach Hause schickten. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die bevorstehende Saison.
Vor mir liegt aber auch auch ein recht vollgepacktes Semester. Mit einem Physikkurs, dem dazugehörigen Praktikum/Labor, zwei Mathekursen und Latein werde ich wahrscheinlich ziemlich ausgebucht sein. Trotzdem werde ich versuchen weiter an meinem Astro Projekt zu arbeiten um die Ergebnisse hoffentlich dieses Semester veröffentlichen zu können.

Das sollte es für heute gewesen sein. Ich freue mich auf ein Weiteres Semester in Haverford und verspreche euch wieder mehr oder weniger regelmäßig auf dem Laufenden zu halten.

I know I have not been reporting in a long time, but now that the semester starts again on Tuesday I will try to post more frequently again. The summer went very well so far. I was back at the research center in Jülich. The work was fun, even if the experiments were not as successful as I would have liked. I've been learning a lot and I plan to come back next year.
What else happened this summer? Rylee visited me for ten days. We had a good time in Germany and the Netherlands with some of my friends from home. In addition, I took a small round trip with my parents through the North East of the USA and Canada. We saw a couple of really interesting places. One highlight was certainly the light show at the parliament building in Ottawa.

I've been back in Haverford for almost two weeks now. Lectures have not started yet, but preseason with the field hockey team was already stressful and time-consuming enough. I would say the hard work already showed its first effects as we sent home Alvernia 2-0 who were ranked #18 in the nation. I'm very excited about the upcoming season.
Also coming up though is a quite packed semester. With a physics course, the associated lab, two math courses and Latin, I will probably be pretty busy. Nevertheless, I will continue to work on my Astro project hoping to publish the results within this semester.

Das hat leider mal wieder etwas länger gedauert und jetzt is das Semester auch schon um. In einer Woche geht’s wieder zurück nach hause. Die letzten Wochen waren leider etwas stressig, weshalb ich nicht dazu gekommen bin hier mehr zu schreiben. Aber jetzt, nachdem ich alle Prüfungen geschrieben habe habe ich auch wieder Ruhe das zu tun. Weil es jetzt schon so lange her ist, werde ich keinen exakten Recap der gesamten Zeit versuchen, sondern nur ein paar events herausgreifen.

Die Frühjahrs Saison (Spring Season) endete vorletztes Wochenende mit unserem Spring Tournament. Endlich kein Training um 7 Uhr morgens mehr. Trotz unserer sehr dezimierten Mannschaftsstärke lief das Turnier ausgezeichnet. Unglücklicherweise verletzte sich unser Torwart Daniele in vorletzten Spiel, so dass Charlotte einspringen musste. Trotz nur wenig Trainingszeit als Torwart wirklich eine herausragende Leistung, vielen Dank für den Einsatz. Das andere große Event der Spring Season war unser sog. Junior Day. Das heißt, Training mit ca. 30 High Schoolern und nach potentiellen Rekruten Ausschau halten. Apropos Rekruten, die diesjährigen Zulassung Entscheidungen sind raus und wir waren, wie auch im letzten Jahr, recht erfolgreich. So wie es aussieht werden wir user Team um sieben neue Mitglieder verstärken können, ganz besonders wichtig: eine zweite Torhüterin. Das soll’s zum Hockey gewesen sein. 

In den Zeitraum in dem ich nicht zum schreiben gekommen bin fällt auch Ostern. Es war das erste mal in meinem Leben, dass ich an Ostern nicht mit meiner Familie zusammen war. Umso glücklicher war ich, dass Rylee’s Familie mich an Ostern eingeladen hatte. Wir verbrachten zunächst den Tag in Ocean City am Strand um dann später essen zu gehen. Es war wirklich nett Ostern nich alleine verbringen zu müssen, auch wenn es natürlich nicht das selbe ist wie mit der eigenen Familie.

Am letzten Wochenende stand dann "Haverfest" an, ein großen Fest zum Abschluss des Semesters mit viel Musik und Aktivitäten. Eine willkommene Abwechslung vom Kursalltag und kleine Verschnaufpause vor den Finals. Das ganze begann Freitag und endete Samstag Abend. Wir nutzten die Zeit um uns einfach mal nicht um Schule zu sorgen und nur etwas spaß zu haben bevor es dann mit dem Lernen für Finals losging. Am Sonntag ging es dann zu unserem Schwestercollege Bryn Mawr, die ihr Abschlussfest ”May Day” traditionell am Sonntag nach Haverfest feiern.

In der Vergangen Woche musste ich dann durch die Prüfungen. Ein Essay fürs Writing Seminar und zwei Klausuren für Linguistik und Physik. Das habe ich dann mit der Physik Klausur am Freitag alles hinter mich gebracht. Ich bin sehr zuversichtlich, dass alles gut lief und kann jetzt die letzte Woche noch nutzen um etwas an meinem Astro Projekt zu arbeiten, zu packen und etwas zu entspannen.

In etwas weniger als einer Woche steht dann Schon mein Rückflug an. Ich freue mich natürlich wieder zuhause zu sein, auch wenn es sich komisch anfühlt für etwas mehr als drei Monate hier alles zurückzulassen. Am 17. May fange ich dann an wieder im Forschungszentrum Jülich zu arbeiten. Das wird sicherlich wieder hoch interessant, ich werde wieder so viel lernen und nebenbei auch nich etwas Geld verdienen. Außerdem werde ich auch in Deutschland wieder etwas Hockey pfeifen, darauf freue mich natürlich auch. Dann Anfang July bekomme ich Besuch von hier. Rylee kommt mich für ein paar Tage besuchen und ich werde einen kleinen Crashkurs in europäischer Kultur geben. Natürlich werden wir auch die Gelegenheit nutzen und ein paar meiner Freunde treffen.

Das soll es dann wieder gewesen sein. Ich werde mich wahrscheinlich am Ende des Sommers wieder melden. Dann gibt’s den Recap für den Sommer und den Ausblick auf dass kommende Semester.

Unfortunately, this took a bit longer and now the semester is already over. In a week I will be back home. The last weeks were a little stressful, which is why I did not write more. But now, after I've written all the exams I have time to do so. Since it's been so long now, I will not try an exact recap of the whole time, but only take a few events.

The spring season ended on the penultimate weekend with our Spring Tournament. No more practice at 7am, finally. Despite our slightly decimated numbers, we played exceptionally well. Unfortunately, our goalkeeper Daniele got injured in the penultimate match so that Charlotte had to step in. Despite very little training time as a goalkeeper she did a great job. Shoutout to Charlotte for helping out there. The other big event of the Spring Season was our so called Junior Day. That is, training with about 30 high schoolers and looking for potential recruits. Speaking of recruits, this year's admission decisions are out and we were quite successful. As it appears, we will be able to win seven new players for our team. Especially important: a second goalkeeper.

Another even since during the past few weeks was Easter. For the first time in my life I was not abe to spend Easter with my family. Consequently I was very happy that Rylee's family had invited me to spend Easter with them. We spent the day in Ocean City on the beach and had dinner in the evening. I appreciated not having to spend Easter alone, even if it is not the same as with your own family.

Last weekend Haverfest took place; a big celebration at the end of the semester with lots of music and activities. A great distraction from the everyday life and a little breather before the Finals. The event started Friday and ended Saturday night. We used the time to just not to worry about school and have a little fun before learning for the finals started after the weekend. On Sunday we went to our sister colleague Bryn Mawr, who traditionally celebrates their "May Day" on the Sunday after Haverfest.

The past week was about then about the exams: An essay for the writing seminar and two examinations for linguistics and physics. After finishing Physics on Friday my Semester was in principle over. I am very confident that everything went well and will use the last week to work on my astro project, to pack and relax.

In a little less than a week I am already returning home. I am happy to be back home, of course, even if it feels weird to leave everything here behind for a little more than three months. On May 17th I will start working again at the research centre in Jülich. This will certainly be very interesting, I will learn so much again and  also make some money. In addition, I will also umpire some hockey in Germany; also excited for that. Then in early July I expect a visitor from here. Rylee will visit me for a few days and I will give her a small crash course in European culture. Of course, we will also use the opportunity to meet some of my friends.

That's it again! I will probably report back at the end of the summer with the recap for the summer and the expectations for the coming semester.

Spring Break and First Week after

Und schon geht es wieder los! Eine Woche Ferien war ja schonmal etwas, aber ich hätte auch gerne noch mehr dankend angenommen. Um ehrlich zu sein, gab es tatsächlich noch eine kleine Zugabe, denn Dienstag war frei auf Grund von doch recht heftigem Schneefall.

Ich habe die paar freien Tage genossen. Das Hallenhockeyturnier das ich am ersten Wochenende der Ferien gepfiffen habe, war, wie erwartet, wirklich ausgezeichnete Qualität. Mit Abstand das Beste was ich hier bisher gesehen habe. Das lag mit Sicherheit auch an den Männerteams aus Kanada und einem Haufen Europäer die aus den verschiedensten Gründen nun hier leben und spielen. Ich hatte eine menge Spaß mit den anderen Schiedsrichtern. Natürlich ging es nicht ausschließlich um Spaßhaben, ich wollte mich natürlich auch wie immer weiter verbessern und das Beobachterteam war dabei wirklich sehr hilfreich.

Den Rest der Ferien habe ich dann in New Jersey verbracht. Klingt jetzt nicht allzu aufregend (da muss ich nochmal überlegen ob ich das ins Englische übersetzte, bin noch nicht ganz sicher ob Rylee mir für das Statement den Kopf abreißt), das Programm war aber wirklich nett und relativ entspannend: ein bisschen Hockey, Aquarium, Strand in Atlantic City, Escape Room und eine Menge gutes Essen (teils sogar selbst gekocht).

Dann ging's am Sonntag zurück nach Haverford. Montag ganz normal Vorlesungen und Dienstag dann wie schon erwähnt frei wegen Schnee. Diesmal hat es sich auch tatsächlich gelohnt, denn der Schneefall war zugegebenermaßen doch erheblich. Nach den Frühjahrsferien geht es auch typischer weise wieder los mit dem Training. Hockey startete aber erste diese Woche, so dass ich die Vergangene Woche noch zum Volleyball gehen konnte. Ich werde versuchen neben den drei Einheiten Hockey pro Woche noch einmal wöchentlich etwas Volleyball zu spielen, denn trainieren mit einem zusätzlichen Setter macht das ganze doch etwas produktiver. Gestern sind wir dann auch mit ein paar Tests und simplen Übungen ins Hockeytraining gestartet. Ich bin froh wieder auf dem Platz stehen zu können, das ganze wird lediglich davon getrübt, dass die Trainingszeiten 7 bis 9 Uhr morgens sind.

Etwas überraschend bekam ich am Montag einen Email von einem möglicherweise zukünftigen Studenten hier. Der Grund warum gerade ich die Email bekam, war, dass er auch Hockey spielt (was hier für Männer sehr unüblich ist) und sich daher mit mir treffen wollte um zu sehen, wie meine Erfahrung mit Haverford ist. Ich wusste natürlich überwiegend Positives zu berichten. Es würde mich sehr freuen, wenn er sich letztendlich für Haverford entscheiden würde, dann wäre ich plötzlich nicht mehr ganz allein in der Truppe von Damen. Interessanterweise, war er schon über meinen Blog gestolpert bevor er meinen Namen auf der Haverford-Webseite gesehen hatte.

In Sachen Studium läuft auch alles bestens. Ich habe alle Tests von vor den Ferien zurückbekommen und kann wohl mehr als zufrieden sein. Aktuell habe ich auch nicht allzu viel Stress, so dass ich etwas Zeit in meinen Forschungsprojekte investieren kann. Der erste Teil des Astroprojekts ist im Prinzip abgeschlossen und wir wenden uns nun Daten von anderen Teleskopen zu. Leider ist das andere Projekt immer noch etwas festgefahren, aber ich hoffe, dass in den nächsten Wochen Bewegung herein kommt.

Das soll's auch schon wieder gewesen sein. Ich werde dich dann wieder melden, wenn ich das nächste mal Zeit habe.

And here we go again! One week free week was better than nothing, but I would have gladly taken even more. To be honest, actually there was a little extra, because we got a snowday on Tuesday.

I enjoyed the few days off. The indoor field hockey tournament I umpired at during the first weekend of the holidays was, as expected, excellent quality. By far the best I have seen here so far. This was undoubtedly due to the men's teams from Canada and a bunch of Europeans who live and play here for a variety of reasons. I had a lot of fun with the other umpires. Of course, it was not just about fun, I also wanted to improve myself and the umpires managers were very helpful.

The rest of the holidays I spent in New Jersey. I know that doesn't sound too exciting (Rylee is probably gonna behead me for this statement), but it was a lot of fun: some more field hockey, aquarium in Camden, beach in Atlantic City, Escape the Room and a lot of good food (partly even self-cooked).

Then we went back to Haverford on Sunday. Lectures resumed as normal on Monday, while we got free on Tuesday because of snowfall. This time it was actually worth it, because the snowfall was admittedly considerable. After spring break is also typical when we start practicing. However, field hockey didn't start until this week so I could go to volleyball last week. I'm going to try to play volleyball once a week, because practicing with an additional setter makes the whole thing a bit more productive. Yesterday we started field hockey practice with a few tests and simple exercises. I am glad to be back on the field, the only downside to this are the practice hours from 7 to 9 in the morning.

Somewhat surprisingly, I got an email from a possibly future student here on Monday. The reason why he emailed me was that he also plays field hockey (which is very unusual for men here) and wanted to meet with me to talk about my experience with Haverford. I would be very excited if he finally decided to come to Haverford, I would suddenly no longer be alone on a squad of ladies. Interestingly, he had already stumbled across my blog before he'd even seen my name on the Haverford website.

In terms of studying, everything is going well. I got all the tests from before the holidays back and can be more than satisfied. At the moment I do not have too much stress, so I can spend some time on my research projects. The first part of the Astronomy project is basically completed and we are now looking into data from other telescopes. Unfortunately, the other project is still kind of stuck, but I hope to get it up an running within the next few weeks.

Going into Spring Break

Hallo zusammen, die erste Hälfte des Semesters ist schon wieder um und das heißt für mich Spring Break. Aber keine Sorge, es geht nicht nach Mexiko. Ich bleibe hier in der Gegend und werde versuchen etwas den Kopf frei zu bekommen.

Aber zunächst zu den letzten zwei Wochen. Die Wochen vor den Ferien sind immer etwas stressiger, weil das normalerweise die Zeit ist, wenn sämtliche Zwischenprüfungen anstehen. Physik stand zuerst an (darüber hatte ich ja schon kurz berichtet). Die Klausur war natürlich wieder unbeaufsichtigt. Außerdem konnte ich mir wieder selbst aussuchen wann ich die Klausur schreiben wollte. Die Wahl viel auf Mittwoch Abend und das lief dann auch ganz gut. In der folgenden Woche standen gleich zwei Klausuren an, in Statistik und in Linguistik und zwar beides am Mittwoch, also etwas Stress da. Aber ich fühlte mich eigentlich ganz gut vorbereitet. Bei Statistik habe ich ein recht gutes Gefühl, für Linguistik muss ich mal abwarten.

Nicht-Akademisch ging es auch ganz interessant zu. Ich habe mal wieder angefangen Volleyball zu spielen. Die Geschichte ist etwas kurios. Alles begann vor den letzten Winterfreien, unser veranstaltete zum Abschluss des Semesters ein Weihnachtswichtel. Ich hatte meinen Suitemate Derrick gezogen und da er früher, in High School, ebenfalls Volleyball gespielt hat, habe ich ihm eine Volleyball geschenkt. Den wollten wir dann vor ein paar Wochen den neuen Ball zum ersten mal erproben, zufälliger Weise hatte das Damen Volleyballteam gerade zu dem Zeitpunkt dort und so wurden wir gefragt, ob wir denn nicht einfach mitspielen wollen. Das war natürlich gar keine Frage und hat super Spaß gemacht, denn auch das Team ist super nett. Ich musste allerdings feststellen, dass ich doch ein etwas brauchte um wieder in die Bewegungsabläufe reinzukommen und die Präzision in meinen Zuspiel wiederzuerlangen. Spätestens eine Woche später ging das dann aber schon viel besser, Derrick und ich sind seit dem wöchentlich dabei. Derrick wird nun beim Volleyball sogar im Prinzip den selben Job übernehmen den ich beim Hockey habe. Mal sehen, ob ich nach den Ferien noch Zeit haben werde mal hin und wieder beim Volleyball vorbei zugucken, denn wir werden wieder ins Hockeytraining starten.
Neben etwas Volleyball stand im Fitnessstudio das sog. "Maxing" an, das heißt bis ans Gewichtslimit gehen für die verschiednen Übungen. Ich war soweit ganz zufrieden mit dem was möglich war, insbesondere da ich erst seit etwa drei Monaten durchgehend trainiere.

Nun steht Spring Break vor der Tür und während ich das hier schreibe warte ich darauf, dass ich abgeholte werde um am Wochenende auf einem Großen Hallenhockey Turnier hier in der nähe zu pfeifen. Darauf freue ich mich schon sehr, denn ich werde nicht der einzige internationale Schiedsrichter sein und diesmal gibts auch eine Wettkampfklasse für Erwachsene. So kann ich bei hoffentlich wirklich gutem Hockey, wieder Schiedsrichter von überall auf der Welt kennenlernen.
Das Turnier geht bis Sonntag und danach werde ich den Rest der Woche bei Rylee und Paige in New Jersey verbringe, das wird sicherlich auch interessant. Auf diese Weise werde ich hoffentlich mal was anderes in den Kopf bekommen als Arbeit und Forschung, denn das ist nun wirklich nötig. So langsam fühle ich wie ich in den Alltagstrott hereingezogen werde und dringen mal wieder was anderes machen muss um zu refokussieren. Das sollte dan nach den Ferien mit etwas mehr sport wieder einfacher werden.

So, das war's dann für diese Woche. Ich werde mal sehen, wenn mir im Laufe der nächsten Woche was langweilig wird melde ich mich nochmal mit ein paar Eindrücken vom Turnier, ansonsten bis zum nächsten mal.

Hey everyone, one half of the semester is already over and that means spring break is waiting next week. But no worries, I am not going to Mexico, I will just stay in the area and try to get my head free of all the school stuff.

But first back to the last two weeks. The weeks before the holidays are always a little more stressful, because this is normally the time when all the midterms are. Physics was up first (as I already briefly reported). The exam was, of course, unproctored again. Also, I could choose when I wanted to take the exam. The choice fell on Wednesday night and it went quite well. In the following week there were two exams, in statistics and in linguistics, both on Wednesday, so there was some stress. But I felt quite well prepared. In statistics, I have a pretty good feeling, for linguistics, I have to wait.

Non-academically, it was also a quite interesting time. I started playing volleyball again. The story is actually a little strange. It all began before the last winter holidays; we organized a secret snowflake at the end of the semester. I drew my suitemate Derrick and, as he used to play volleyball in high school too, I got him a volleyball. Now we wanted to try out the new ball for the first time a few weeks ago. By chance the womens' volleyball team happened to be there at the same time, so we were asked if we would like to play with them. This obviously not a question and it was great fun, because the team is super nice. I had to realize, however, that I needed a bit to get back into the movements and to regain the precision in my setting. Derrick and I have been going to there pick-ups since then. Also, Derrick will now take the same job for the volleyball team that I am doing for field hockey. I will, have to see whether I will still have time after the holidays to keep playing some volleyball, because we will start back into hockey training.
In addition to a little volleyball, the so called we "maxed", which means trying out the weight limits in lift. I was quite satisfied with what was possible, especially since I had only been training for about three months.

Now, Spring Break is coming up and while I'm writing this I'm waiting to be picked up to umpire over the weekend at a big indoor hockey tournament. I am really looking forward to it, because I will not be the only international umpire and there will also be a adult competition. So I will enjoy some really good hockey and get to know umpires from all over the world.
The tournament goes until Sunday and then I will spend the rest of the week with Rylee and Paige in New Jersey, which will certainly be interesting. In this way, I hope I'll get my head cleared of work and research, because that is really necessary. Slowly I feel like I'm dragged into the everyday stupidity and need to do something else to be able to refocus. This should also be easier after the holidays with a little more sport.

Has been a long time

Sorry, das ich so lange gebraucht habe mich mal wieder zu melden, aber die vergangen Wochen waren ebenso stressig wie ereignisreich. Damit ich euch nichts schuldig bleibe ein kleiner abriss was ich so alles in den letzten Wochen gemacht habe.

Zunächst einmal wäre zu erwähnen, das ich mal wieder nett sonnengebräunt bin, den vorletztes Wochenende ging es mal wieder nach Florida. Diesmal war's die Golfküste, genauer gesagt Sarasota. Natürlich zahle ich nicht selber sondern lasse US Field Hockey die Rechnung übernehmen und dazu kommt dann noch eine kleine Aufwandsentschädigung die mir auch nicht ungelegen kommt. Auf Grund eines Fehlers bei der Hotelreservierung hatte ich sogar eine eigene Suite mit King-Size Bett, schon ganz nett so... Natürlich stand ein bisschen pfeifen auf dem Programm, aber diesmal nicht so viel wie im November in Palm Springs. Deshalb blieb auch etwas mehr Freizeit die genutzt werden wollte. Ich war wieder mit Paige unterwegs und so ginge es zweimal zum Strand, wo ich tatsächlich sogar schwimmen war. Das absolute highlight war aber einen Auslieferung als Chinesisches Essen auf Rädern, denn durch eine Verkettung unglücklicher Umstande strandeten wir leider direkt am ersten Abend in dem chinesischen Restaurant zu dem wir zum Abendessen gegangen waren und mussten nach einem Weg zurück ins Hotel suchen. Der junge Essenszusteller des Restaurants bot freundlicherweise an uns am Hotel abzusetzen und so kamen wir in den Genuss einer kurzen und sehr lustigen Tour durch Sarasota.

Die Folgewoche war dann natürlich etwas stressiger, denn, weil ich verständlicherweise in Florida besseres zu tun hatte als Hausaufgaben zu machen, war einiges an Arbeit liegen geblieben. Das ließ sich zwar irgendwie bewältigen, ist aber einer der Gründe, warum ihr so lange nichts von mir gehört habt. Die Arbeitslast wurde geringer als wir am Donnerstag frei wegen Schneefall bekamen. Um ehrlich zu sein habe ich nicht so ganz verstanden, warum wegen ca. 12 cm Schnee gleich alles dicht machen musste, aber sei's drum, ich werde mich nicht beschweren. So konnte ich den Tag nutzen um einen Essay anzufangen und die liegengeblieben Aufgaben aufzuarbeiten.

Am folgenden Wochenende ging es dann weiter mit pfeifen. Finaltag beim Hallenturnier, das ich etwas weiter außerhalb von Philadelphia schon in den Wochen davor gepfiffen hatte. Ich hatte ein paar ganz ansprechend Spiele und auch hier gibt neben sehr guter Verpflegung ein paar Dollar die ich als Forschungsassistent hier am College nicht so schnell verdienen kann.

Dann die Vergangene Woche, diesmal kein Schneefrei, aber ein sehr viel aufregenderer Trip nach Princeton am letzten Dienstag. Um die frage warum zum Henker ich eineinhalb Stunden nach New Jersey fahre direkt zu beantworten: Ich war da mal kurz arbeiten. Im Zuge meines Astro Forschungsprojekts hatte ich gemeinsam mit meinem Professor ein Meeting in Princeton. Da eben jener Professor hier früher selbst Student und später Professor war, kam ich den Genuss einer sehr persönlichen Campusführung, denn wir waren etwas zu früh zu unserem Treffen. Das Meeting mit einer Doktorandin aus Südafrika und einer Professorin aus Großbritannien verlief dann sehr erfolgreich und Produktiv und es wird wohl noch weitere Treffen geben. Allerdings musste ich auch feststellen, das ich noch wirklich viel zu lernen habe, bis ich in der Unterhaltung zwischen den Professoren alles verstehe, aber es erleichterte mich etwas das auch die Doktorandin gelegentlich genauso hilflos aussah. Zum Abschluss des Tages ginge es dann noch zum Essen mit ein paar anderen Doktoranden und Professoren aus Princeton und einem einem der bis letztes Semester noch in Haverford lehrte und zufällig für einen Vortrag auch in Princeton war. Man mag viellicht denken, dass Abendessen mit einem Haufen Astrophysikern vielleicht nicht die aller spaßigste Angelegenheit ist, aber die Atmosphäre war sehr entspannt und die Gruppe war recht bund gewürfelt, so das sich die Unterhaltung sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltete. Das Beste natürlich auch in diesem Fall: Princeton zahlte, so konnte ich mir ein Restaurant leisten in das ich sonst wohl eher nicht gegangen wäre.

Und jetzt eine Zwischenprüfung in Physik später ist schon Freitag Nacht und ich habe endlich Zeit gefunden hier mal wieder was zu schreiben. Ach, fast hätte ich es vergessen, ich habe kürzlich meine eigenen Arbeitsplatz in einem der Labore bekommen ein toller 32" Bildschirm mit docking für mein MacBook, deswegen sitze ich jetzt zum Arbeiten fast nur noch im Keller des Gebäudes mit den Naturwissenschaften. Da unten habe ich meine Ruhe und wie gesagt meinen sehr netten Computerarbeitsplatz, endlich wieder zwei Bildschirme.

Das wäre es dann für dieses Mal, das sollte ja wohl erstmal lang genug sein. Ich hoffe dazu in der Zukunft etwas häufiger zu kommen, aber ich kann es leider nicht versprechen.

Sorry, it took me so long to get back to you again. But the past few weeks have been as eventful as stressful. Thus here is a little overview what I have been up to during the past few weeks.

First I need to mentioned that I am suntanned again, as I went to Florida two weeks ago. This time it drew me two the Gulf Cost more precisely to Sarasota. Of course I wouldn't go if I had to pay myself but as US Field Hockey pays the bill for me I am more than happy to spend a few days in warm weather. In addition I most certainly won't say no to the little compensation that we receive. Due to an error in the hotel reservations I ended up with a suite with a king size bed all to myself. Of course there was a bit of umpiring on the agenda, but this time not as much as in November in Palm Springs. That's why there was also a little more leisure time to be spend. I was traveling with Paige again. We went to the beach twice and I actually went actually swimming this time. However, the absolute highlight was a delivery as Chinese food. Due to some unfortunate circumstances we stranded in the Chinese restaurant to which we had gone for dinner and had to search for a way back to the hotel on the first evening. The young delivery guy from the restaurant kindly offered us to drop us of at the hotel and so we came to enjoy a short and very funny tour through Sarasota.

The following week was then consequently a little more stressful, because as I understandably had better things to do in Florida than homework some work had been carried over. I was somehow able to coped with it, but it is one of the reasons why you have not heard from me for so long. The workload was lowered when got a snow day on Thursday. To be honest, I have not quite understood, why one had to shut everything down because of about five inches (12 cm) of snow, but so be it. I won't complain. So I could use the day to work up some of the piled up work and get started on an essay.


On the next weekend I went to umpire again. Final day at the indoor tournament, which I had umpired already the weeks before a little further outside of Philadelphia. I had a few quite appealing games and also earned, besides very good food, a few dollars I couldn't earn as quickly as a research assistant at college.

Then the past week, this time no snow day, but a much more exciting trip to Princeton last Tuesday. To answer the question why the heck I went an hour and a half to New Jersey: I was there for work. In the course of my astro research project I had a meeting in Princeton together with my professor. Since this professor himself was a student and later a professor at Princeton, I was able to enjoy a very personal campus tour, as we were a bit early to our meeting. The meeting with a PhD student from South Africa and a professor from the UK was very successful and productive and there will probably be more meetings in the future. However, I also had to realize that I still have a lot to learn until I will be able to understand everything in the conversation between the professors. Anyways, I felt much better as even the PhD student occasionally looked slightly confused. At the end of the day, I went out to dinner with a couple of other PhD students and professors from Princeton and one who taught at Haverford until last semester and happened to be in Princeton for a talk. One might think that dinner with a bunch of astrophysicists may not be the most fun, but the atmosphere was very relaxed and the group was quite well mixed, so the conversation touched on a variety of topics. The best thing also in this case: Princeton paid, so I could afford a restaurant in which I would probably not have gone otherwise.

And now one midterm exam in physics later it is Friday night and I have finally found time to write again. Oh, I almost forgot, I recently got my own workplace in one of the labs equipped a great 32" screen with docking for my MacBook, so I am now almost always working in the basement of the science building. It is quite and I got this nice computer workplace, finally two screens again.

So da bin ich auch schon wieder zurück. Tut mir leid, dass ich so lange gebracht habe um mich hier mal wieder zu melden, aber ich wollte die Ferien gerne zum Entspannen nutzen, das ist mir soweit  ganz gut gelungen. Ich habe viel Zeit mit meiner Familie verbracht und meine Freunde endlich mal wiedergesehen. Vier Monate sind schon eine Lange Zeit!
Aber jetzt bin ich auch froh wieder zurück in den USA zu sein, ich freue mich auf neue Herausforderungen und immer neue Menschen. Natürlich bin ich aber auch gerne zurück um meine Freude hier wieder zu treffen.

Das Abenteuer beginnt aufs neue und die erste Woche bildet da keine Ausnahme. Heißt direkt volle Konzentration, Arbeiten, Arbeiten und mehr Arbeiten. Das ist auch einer der Gründe warum ich mich erst jetzt zu Beginn der zweiten Woche melde, denn an langsam einsteigen denkt hier keiner der Professoren und natürlich wollte ich auch etwas Zeit für meine Freude habe, die habe ich schließlich auch seit einem Monat nicht mehr gesehen. Außerdem standen noch ein paar Meetings an um die Marschroute für meine zwei Forschungsprojekte festzulegen. Das ist zum einen die Forschung in Astronomie, wo ich bei der Datenauswertung für das Planck Radioteleskop helfe und zum anderen arbeite ich an Simulationen für einen meiner Physikprofessor, dabei gehts es aktuell um den sogenannten "depletion effect", die Selbstordnung von dynamischen Systemen mit Partikeln unterschiedlicher Größe und Form.

Auch sportlich gehts natürlich direkt weiter, das heißt wieder drei mal die Woche Workout im Fitnessstudio und dazu drei Läufe. Einen der Läufe haben wir aber diese Woche mit einem spontanen Hockey spiel ersetzt, das war möglich, weil es erstaunlicherweise nich allzu kalt ist. Am Samstag war ich dann bei einem großen Hallenturnier hier in der Nähe pfeifen und war positiv vom Level des Sports überrascht. Für Anfang Februar bin ich erneut für ein Turnier in Florida registriert, heißt eben doch noch etwas angenehme Temperaturen und Sonne im Gegensatz zu dem etwas nassen Wetter hier.

Das soll's gewesen sein für diese Woche. Ich werde Versuchen mir nicht ganz so viel Zeit zu meinem nächsten Post zu lassen.

Well, I am back in the states. Sorry it took me so long to follow up with my next post here, but I wanted to use the break to relay a little bit, I must say that worked out quite well. I spend a lot of time with my family and finally met my friends again. Four months are a long time!
But now I am glad to be back in the US, looking forward to new challenges and even more new people. Obviously, I also like to be back to see my friends here again.

The adventure starts again and it starts right away. Meaning focus, work, work and more work. That's also one of the reasons why I didn't find time yet, because none of the professors seem to be drawn towards the idea of easing in slowly. Additionally I also wanted to spend some time with my friends, who I have not seen in a month. Moreover, I had some meetings to lay out the plan for my two research projects. First there is my project in astronomy where I help developing a tool to do data analysis on the Planck radio telescope. Secondly I work on a simulation for one of my physics professors that deals with the so called "depletion effect", a self ordering effect in dynamic systems with particles of different shape and size.

Also the sport continues, that means three workouts a week in the gym and three additional runs. As it is not too cold, we replaced one of this week's runs with a pick-up game on the field. On Saturday I went to a indoor tournament nearby to umpire and frankly I was positively surprised by the level of play. In early February I will be going down to Florida again for another tournament, I am looking forward to even nicer temperature and some sunshine in contrast to the grey and rainy weather here.

Da ist es schon um! Mein erstes Semester in Haverford ist heute offiziell zusende und Morgen geht es dann zurück nach Deutschland für etwa einen Monat. Alle Kurse habe schon letzten Freitag aufgehört, die vergangene Woche war dann nur noch Prüfungen. Für mich hieß das zwei Klausuren in Mathe und Physik, ein Essay fürs Writing Seminar und ein Abschlussprojekt für Informatik. Glücklicherweise hatte ich den Essay im Prinzip schon Ende letzter Woche fertig, so dass dort nicht mehr allzu viel Arbeit blieb. Mein Informatik Projekt bestand darin einen Schachcomputer zu programmieren, das gelang auch weitestgehend, einziges Problem: Der Verbrauch an Rechenleistung war enorm was das Programm auf einem normalen Computer relativ langsam werden ließ. Aber wozu hat das Physik Department den einen Clustercomputer zu dem ich Zugang habe. Dank ein paar mehr Kernen unter der Haube, macht Fock (das cluster) dann auch einen Zug etwa alle zwei Minuten, das allerdings dann so gut, dass ich ohne chance blieb.
Für die Klausuren hat Haverford ein ganz besonders interessantes System. Der Honor Code wird hier wirklich groß geschrieben und daher sind alle Prüfungen grundsätzlich unbeaufsichtigt, oft sogar zum mit nach Hause nehmen und selber timen. Meine Physik Prüfung war einen solche Prüfung, Aufgaben am letzten Freitag abgeholt und eine Woche Zeit um die Arbeit zu schrieben. Wenn man einmal anfing betrug das Zeitlimit aber 3 Stunden, außerdem war das benutzen des Buches, der Notizen und des Computers erlaubt. Einzig das Internat war tabu. Aber wie gesagt, niemand wird beaufsichtigt. In der Schule wäre das wahrscheinlich als Einladung zum spicken, schummeln und kollaborieren wahrgenommen worden, hier definitiv nicht. Wie es vorgesehen war und ohne Schummeln: 3 Stunden, keinen Sekunde länger, nur ich, mein Buch und meinen Notizen. Das Gute ist, ich kann mich hier wirklich darauf verlassen, dass jeder Andere das genauso sieht und hält.
Meine Matheklausur hatte ein etwas anderes Format. Es handelte sich um ein so genanntes "self scheduled exam", heißt, man hat die Wahl zwischen drei verschiede Zeiten (9-12, 14-17 und 19-22) an jedem Tag der "Finals Week" um die Klausur zu schrieben. Zu beginn dieser Zeit holt man sich seine Prüfung ab, hat eine feste Auswahl an Räumen in denen man die dann schreiben kann, wiederum ohne jede Aufsicht, und am Ende der drei Stunden reicht man die Arbeit wieder ein.

Ich nutzte das Wochenende um etwas für Physik zu lernen, schrieb Physik am Montag und ging direkt über zum Mathe lernen. Damit war ich dann Dienstagabend fertig und entschied mich die Prüfung Dienstag von 19-22 Uhr zu schreiben. So war ich Dienstagabend praktisch mit drei von vier Finals fertig, nutzte den Mittwoch um mein Informatikprojekt abzuschließen und war damit durch für dieses Semester. Damit konnte ich Donnerstag Tag zum relaxen nutzen, hatte das abschließende Treffen mit meinem Informatikprofessor zu meinem Abschlussprojekt und hatte Abends noch Zeit um nochmal nach Philly rein zu fahren.
Dort stellte ich erst richtig fest wie sehr ich Deutschland doch vermisse. Denn wir hatten die verrückte Idee deutsch essen zu gehen. Ein sehr willkommener Vorgeschmack auf Zuhause!

Es sind nun fast vier Monate in den Staaten und so sehr ich alles hier liebe, so sehr freu ich mich jetzt auch wieder zurück zu kommen. Familie und Freunde sehen und legal ein Bier trinken können, das auch noch gut schmeckt und den Namen Bier auch verdient hat. Das einzige auf das ich mich so gar nicht freue ist der Flug, neun Stunden von Philly nach München, ein paar Stunden Aufenthalt dort und dann weiter nach Düsseldorf, wo meinen Familie auf mich wartet. Alles in allem über ein Tag Reisezeit, aber das wird sich lohnen.

Ich werde mich wahrscheinlich erst im neuen Jahr wieder melden un wünsche allen deswegen schon jetzt: Frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

My first semester at Haverford is over! Tomorrow I am flying back to Germany for a month. All classes already ended last Friday, the last week was only for Finals. For me that meant two exams in Math and Physics, one essay for the Writing Seminar and a final project for Computer Science. Fortunately, I basically finished the essay by the end of last week. My Computer Science project was to develop a chess computer, that worked pretty well, there was just one Problem: The consumption of computation power is significant, which makes it almost impossible to run it on a normal computer. Die Lösung: Clustercomputing. Why else do I have access to the physics department's cluster computer. Thanks to a few more cores Fock (the cluster computer) was able to complete one turn in about two minutes. Actually there was no point in bringing up this patience, because I had no chance against the algorithm anyway.
To take the exams there is a pretty special system in place at Haverford. The Honor Code really is a huge deal here and thus all exams are unproctored, often times even to take home and time yourself. My Physics exam was one of these exams, I picked up the test last Friday and until today to complete it. Once you start you are limited to three hours, while the use of the textbook and my notes, even a computer was allowed, just the internet was off limits. In school the unproctored exams were most likely be understood as a invitation to cheat and collaborate, not so here. As it was intended I took the exam in 3 hours with just my textbook, my notes and Mathmatica. The good thing about Haverford is that I think I can trust everyone here to doe the same.
My Math exam had a slightly different format. It was a so called "self-scheduled" exam, meaning you can take it anytime during finals week at three different times a day. At the beginning of this time frame you pick up your exam, picks one of the designated rooms (again completely unproctored), and after three hour you return your exam.
I used the weekend to study for physics, took physics on Monday and went straight to studying math. Tuesday night I felt ready for math and took it from 7-10 pm. That way I finished three out of four finals by Tuesday night, I used the Wednesday to finalise my computer science project and was done for this semester. Consequently, I was able to use the Thursday to relax, had my final meeting with my computer science professor about the chess computer and even had time to go into Philly again in the evening.
In Philly I realised how much I actually miss Germany, because we had the crazy Idea to go to a German restaurant. I really enjoyed the little home appetiser!

It has been almost four month in the states now and even though I really enjoyed the time here, I am really looking forward to go back home. See my family and friends and legally drink a beer that actually tastes good and deserves to be called a beer. The only thing I am really not looking forward to is the flight, nine hours from Philadelphia to Munich a few hours in Munich and the another hour to Düsseldorf, where my family will be waiting for me. All in all, more than one day of travel, but it will be worth it!

I probably won't post anything until the beginning of the new semester, so I would like to wish everyone: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thanksgiving in Florida

Thanksgiving Ferien sind fast vorbei und ich habe die vergangene drei Tage genutzt um einem anderen Hobbies (natürlich verbunden mit Hockey) nachzugehen. Ich bin zur Zeit in Florida genauer in Palm Beach, wo in den vergangen vier Tagen das jährliche National Field Hockey Festival stattfand. Ein gigantisches Turnier mit über 170 Teams auf 24 Feldern und 113 Schiedsrichter und ich war einer davon. Das bedeutete 11 Spiele in drei Tagen bei nur knapp unter 30°C und strahlendem Sonnenschein. Entsprechend bin ich jetzt recht müde, aber es hat sich gelohnt für einen bezahlten Flug und Aufenthalt in Florida, während in Haverford Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt herrschen. Unglücklicherweise gin damit auch eine etwas ungewohnte Zeit zum Aufstehen einher, 5:20, denn das Turnier begann schon um 7:30. Das hatte dann aber den netten Nebeneffekt das wir jeden Morgen den Sonnenaufgang über den Spielfeldern beim International Palm Beach Polo Club bewundern durften.
Wir heißt in diesem Fall ich und Paige, einen der Spielerinnen von unserem Team in Haverford, auch Paige war zum pfeifen hier. Nach Turnierende unternahmen wir dann einen Kurztrip zum Strand, azur blaues Wasser, bestes Wetter und wirklich toller Sand.

Morgen geht's dann zurück nach Pennsylvania, in die Kälte, für drei weitere Wochen bevor ich zurück nach Deutschland fliege. Ich freue mich schon darauf meinen Familie und Freunde wiederzusehen.

Thanksgiving break is almost over and I used to the past three days to pursue another hobby (obviously related to field hockey). I am in Florida more precisely in Palm Beach right now, where the annual National Field Hockey Festival took place. This is a gigantic tournament with over 170 teams on 24 fields and 113 umpires and I was one of them. That meant eleven games in three days, while the temperatures where only barely below 30°C (a little above 80°F) and constant sunshine. Consequently I am quite exhausted right now, but it was totally worth it for a paid for flight to and stay in Florida, while temperatures in Haverford are close to freezing. Unfortunately that also meant getting up at 5:20, because the tournament already started at 7:30. Which was less annoying because we got to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the fields at the International Palm Beach Polo Club.
We means in this case me and Paige, one of the players from my team at Haverford, who was also umpiring. After the tournament was officially over we took a quick trip to the beach, azure blue water, amazing weather and incredibly soft sand.

Tomorrow we are flying back to Pennsylvania, into the cold, for three more weeks before I get to go back to Germany for winter break. I am looking forward to seeing my family and friends back home.

Towards next break - Thanksgiving!

Die nächsten Ferien stehen schon wieder vor der Tür, nur noch drei Tage bis Thanksgiving break. Danach geht es dann in die heiße Phase des Semesters, zwei Wochen Vorlesungen und eine Woche Finals. Aber erstmal geht's jetzt wie gesagt in die Freien und die sind auch schon wieder nötig.

Ich werde diese Ferien mal nicht hier auf dem Campus verbringen, sondern fliege Mittwoch nach Palm Beach zum jährlichen nationalen Hockey Festival. Das ist ein riesiges Hockey Turnier, das jedes Jahr ausgetragen wird, in erster Linie gedacht, damit sich Spielerinnen fürs College empfehlen können. Ich werde dort dieses Jahr pfeifen und bin sehr gespannt wie das Niveau ist. Werde dann definitiv berichten, wie man sich dort im Vergleich zu unserem europäischen Hockey schlug. Zum Glück bin ich dort nicht ganz allein, sondern eine der Spielerinnen hier vom College wird ebenfalls dort pfeifen, vielleicht haben wir auch etwas Gelegenheit uns in Palm Beach mal umzusehen. Der kurze Tripp nach Florida kommt ganz gelegen, denn hier hat der Herbst nun endgültig begonnen raue Seiten aufzuziehen, während es vergangene Woche noch teilweise etwa 20°C waren sind wir jetzt bei 6°C und Sturm. In Florida erwarten mich dann voraussichtlich etwa angenehme 22°C und hoffentlich viel Sonne.

Ohne Hockey Training waren die letzten Wochen relativ entspannt, keine Hausaufgaben bis tief in die Nacht, sondern genug Zeit tagsüber um das zu erledigen. Auf Grund des guten Wetters letzte Woche habe ich dann aber doch einen nicht unbeträchtliche Zeit auf dem Platz verbracht. Mal alleine mal mit ein paar von den Spielerinnen. Die Nähe zum Platz ist wirklich praktisch, so kann man im Prinzip zu jeder Zeit mal für ein Stunde oder so raus gehen und Spielen. In Deutschland hat jetzt natürlich schon die Hallensaison angefangen. Hallenhockey werde ich hier definitiv vermissen.

Das soll's für heute gewesen sein, gibt nicht viel zu berichten und ich werde mich dann wahrscheinlich nächsten Sonntag nach dem Turnier wieder zu Wort melden.

Our next break is just around the corner, just three days of classes until Thanksgiving break. After that we will start into the finial weeks of this semester. Two weeks of classes plus one week of finals left. But for now I am just looking froward to five days off.

I will not be spending this break on campus, but I will fly to Palm Beach on Wednesday to ref at National Field Hockey Festival. That is a huge tournament held annually mainly meant to be a showcase opportunity for players looking to be recruited by one of the colleges. I'm really looking forward to see how the level of play compares to what I am used to from Europe. Fortunately I won't go all alone, but one of the players from my team will join me to ref too. Hopefully we will also find a opportunity to see a little bit of Palm beach that's not just the hockey fields. This short trip to Florida comes at a nice time, as fall has started to show his ugly face at Haverford. While we had temperature of about 20°C (68°F) last week, we are now down to 6°C (42°F) and storm. In Florida we will have nice 22°C (70°F) and hopefully a lot of sun.

Without hockey practice the last weeks were relatively relaxing, no homework late into the night, instead enough time to get this work done during the day. Due to the great wether I still spend quite a lot time on the field either alone, just hitting balls or with some of the players. Being so close to the field is really convenient I can literally go whenever I want to to play. Obviously the indoor season has already started in Germany. Indoor hockey will probably be one of the things I am going to miss here.

That's it for today, there is not much to talk about and my next post will probably come next Sunday after the tournament.

Election Night in the US

Heute werde ich ausnahmsweise nicht das Gleiche in Deutsch und Englisch schreiben.

So fühlt es sich also an, wenn bei einer Wahl wirklich etwas auf dem Spiel steht! Die Stimmung ist sehr angespannt. Haverford ist wohl mit überwältigender Mehrheit demokratisch und der Fokus auf diese Wahlen ist immens den ganzen Tag hörten man nicht anderes als "Hast du schon gewählt?", Fehlen von Vorlesung war entschuldigt um zu wählen und der Transport zu den Wahllokalen wurde organisiert vom College.
Aber man hört auch über die etwas bittere Seite, der Wahlen hier die ja eigentlich frei und gleich sein sollten. Es ist zutiefst irritierend zu hören, dass das Personal in den Wahllokalen wohl die Stimmabgabe willentlich erschwerte. Ohne dabei in die eine oder die andere Richtung zu weisen, es ist davon auszugehen, dass immer genau eine der beiden bedeutenden Parteien davon profitiert.

Jetzt gerade sitzen wir alle angespannt vor den TV Geräten und das Entsetzen ist fassbar und stetig steigend, während es doch tatsächlich so scheint als ob Trump diesen Staat Pennsylvania gewinnen wird. Der Unterschied ist bisher nicht ausdrückbar in Prozent, es sind etwa 3000 Stimmen, nachdem es den ganzen Abend nach einem Sieg Clintons aussah. Das könnte dann die Entscheidung in dieser Nacht sein, mit den 20 Stimmen wäre Trump fast bei den notwendigen 270 Stimmen angekommen.

Ich verbrachte den ersten Teil des Abends mit dem Hockey Team und schien die Stimmung zu beginn noch entspannt, konnte man regelrecht spüren wie die Stimmung in den Keller ging als die Möglichkeit, dass Trump tatsächlich gewinnen könnte realer wurde.

Ich möchte auf etwas verweisen, das Klaus Kleber vorgestern in heute sagte. Er verglich die Stimmung in den USA gerade mit der Stimmung in Großbritannien vor dem Brexit-Referendum und ich befürchte, er könnte damit den Ausgang dieser Wahl vorhergesagt haben. Fast alle Vorhersagen schienen sicher in der Einschätzung das Clinton das Rennen machen würde, aber genau das haben wir auch in Großbritannien mit dem Brexit beobachtet.

Die eine Tatsache, die mir die meisten Sorgen bereitet, is nicht, dass Donald Trump wohl der nächste Präsident der USA werden wird, sondern dass die Republikaner wohl auch sowohl Repräsentantenhaus als auch, so scheint es gerade, den Senat übernehmen werden. Auf diese Weise gibt es absolut nichts, was zwischen Trump und er Realisierung der radikalen Ideen steht, die während des Wahlkamps aufkamen.

Update:
Nun ist es offiziell, Donald Trump wird der 45. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Niemand in Europa hätte das für möglich gehalten, alle hatten ihn von vornherein abgeschrieben. Die Republikaner übernehmen beide Kammern des Kongresses und zumindest bis 2018 (dann stehen die nächsten Kongresswahlen an) haben die nun erstmal weitgehend freie Hand.
Na gut, TTIP dürfte damit wohl erstmal vom Tisch sein, aber wer weiß was uns sonst noch alles in der US Außenpolitik bevorsteht. Europa muss dringend aufhöre sich selbst du demontieren, wir könnten es bald auf der globalen Bühne brauchen.

Eine große Sorgen, die mir dann in der vergangen Nacht noch kam, ist die Sorge um unser Klima. Trump hat wiederholte gesagt, dass er den Klimawandel für eine Schwindel hälte. Was wird nun aus den Übereinkünften aus Paris? Ohne den weltgrößten CO2 Produzenten pro Kopf wird es wohl kaum eine echte Änderung geben und mir jedem Jahr Verzögerung könnte es zu spät sein. Die Länder die dann am meiste unter den Folgen des Klimawandels leiden sind oft die Ärmsten der Armen und die Inselstaaten dieser Welt, die am wenigsten dafür können.

I decided that I am not going to just translate what I wrote in German to English.

I wanna share how I experienced this night of the election. I guess, that must be what it feels like when something is at stake in election. You can literally feel the tension as it is rising.
For all my friends who are not familiar with German elections a small summary and why this is so new to me. The German political system has more than just two relevant parties and usually the outcome of the national elections in Germany creates a situation in which not one party can take power, but they have to form coalition which can take a certain amount of time after the election day. So the outcome of the election doesn't necessarily determine the politics of the next years, as the partners in the coalition have to find a compromise on their political opinions. Radical positions are usually normalized out in this process.

Enough about what Germany is like. Just yesterday I watched a major German news network reporting on the US elections and a well known German expert on elections compared the atmosphere prior to the election to the Brexit-Referendum. By doing so he might have predicted the outcome of this election, because what we are seeing right now is that all the pre-election polls which showed Clinton's win, didn't reflect what is going on. In the Brexit-Referendum we observed the same as all the polls predicted a win of Remain and in the end Leave made the race.

Haverford is a widely democratic and consequently the mood here is not the best right now, as the chance of Trump actually winning became more realistic in the course of the night one could sense how the tension rose. Honestly, the one thing that I am most worried about is not Donald Trump winning the presidential election, but the fact that the Republicans are also taking both the House and as it appears the Senate. Thus, there is absolutely nothing normalizing the radical ideas that have surfaced during the campaigns.

What I probably heard most tonight was the sentence "You can just go back to Germany, if shit goes to hell!" And yes I can, but do I want to? No, not for now, because I am enjoying being here at Haverford and let's face it, we might not like the outcome, but we have to and will find a way to live with this. There is a German saying, that reads "Nichts wird so heiß gegessen, wie es gekocht wird!" which translates to "Nothing is eaten as hot as it is cooked!" So let's step back for a moment and wait, lets's wait what actually are going to be the consequences of this election. I definitely know that there are especially marginalized groups that are very worried about this outcome for good reasons, but there is nothing we (especially me) can change about this.

Update:
It is (more or less) official, Donald Trump is going to be the 45th president of the United States of America. To many people didn't even consider the possibility he could win right until he did. The Republicans take House and Senate and will have almost free rein (at least until the next congressional election in 2018). Well, TTIP is probably off the table for now, but who knows what other foreign policies might await us in the next four years. Europe has to stop disassembling itself, we might need it on the international stage very soon.

One great fear that I had not though so much about before came to my mind during the last night. What does this mean for our climate? Donald has repeatedly said that he does not believe in climate change and that this myth was created to destroy the US economy. What is going to happen to the Paris agreement? Without the world's largest CO2 emitter per person there is no hope for change and every year that we wait could be one to much, maybe it is already to late. And the countries who will suffer the most from the consequences of climate change are as usual the poorest of the poor and the island states of this world, who are the least responsible for the phenomenon of global climate change.

Sorry, das es etwas länger bis zum nächsten Beitrag hier gedauert hat, ich hatte zwei recht vollgepackte Wochen mit wenig Zeit mich um was anderes zu kümmern.

Daher hier eine kurze Zusammenfassung, was ihr so verpasst habt. 

Die Hockeysaison ist (leider) vorüber. Nachdem wir es nach dem etwas verkorksten Saisonstart noch in das Playoff-Spiel fürs Halbfinale geschafft hatten, war da dann leider Endstation. Eigentlich sah das Ganze schon sehr gut aus, wir legten einen unglaublichen Start hin und gingen mit 3-0 in Führung, wie wir das noch aus der Hand geben und schließlich in doppelter Verlängerung verlieren konnten kann ich leider nicht erklären. Aber das ist wahrscheinlich mit der Reiz unseres Sports, solche Dinge passieren eben, man denke an Deutschland - Neuseeland in Rio.

Was meine Kurse angeht, läuft alles soweit glatt. Ich warte immernoch auf die Ergebnisse des Physik Test, aber ich habe inzwischen den ersten Essay zurück. Über Noten spricht man hier grundsätzlich nicht, aber man kann wohl sagen dass ich selbst überrascht war, im positiven Sinne. Der nächste

Essay ist schon morgen fällig, diesmal ging das ganze schon etwas flüssiger von der Hand. Wohl nicht nur zu meiner eigenen Überraschung habe ich doch tatsächlich diesmal mehr oder weniger auf Anhieb etwas vernünftiges zustande gebracht. Eine der Hockey-Spielerinnen hatte sich netterweise bereiterklärt mir beim Korrekturlesen zu helfen und ihre erste Reaktion klang ungefähr so: "Oh, das ist ja doch ganz ordentlich!"

Die besuche in den Freitags Office Hours meines Physik Professors um jeweils die nächste Hausaufgabe zu besprechen sind nun schon zu gewohnter Praxis geworden ebenso wie das der Samstagabend mit dem Team verplant ist, mal sehen ob sich das nun außerhalb der Saison ändert. Jedenfalls werde freue ich mich auf etwas mehr Freizeit und vielleicht etwas weniger Stress. Vielleicht findet sich ja sogar mal Zeit an einem Wochenende mal Philly genauer zu erkunden.

Nicht unerwähnt lassen möchte ich auch die Videoschalte zur Firmung meines Bruder. Herzlichen Glückwunsch nochmals! Es war toll mal wieder auch die erweiterte Familie zu sehen, wenn auch nur digital. Henning musste natürlich seiner neu entwickelten Snapchat-Liebe Tribut zollen und das Event bildlich festhalten und posten.

Sorry, that it took me so long to write up my next entry here. I had two pretty busy weeks and no time to keep you up to date.

Short summary of what you missed.

The field hockey season is (unfortunately) over. After the non optimal start into the season we had made it into the playoff game to the Centennial Conference semifinals, but that was our final destination for this year. Actually everything look really good at first, we had a terrific start into the game and went 3-0 ahead in the first half. How we managed to give that away and finally lose in double overtime? I don't know, but I guess this is part of the thrill of our sport. Things like that happen, just think of Germany - New Zealand in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Concerning my classes everything is going quite smoothly. I am still waiting for the results of my physics midterm, but I got my first essay back. People generally do not talk about grades here, let's just say I was positively surprised. The next essay already due tomorrow, but the whole process went much more smoothly and naturally this time. Not only to my own surprise I have apparently managed to create a decent essay on basically the first try this time. One of the field hockey players kindly helped me proofreading my essay and her first reaction was a surprised: "Oh, this is pretty decent!"

The visits to the Friday office hours of my physics professor to discuss the next homework have become a tradition as to block off Saturday nights for team events. Let's see whether that changes now that we are off-season. In any case I am looking forward to a little bit more free time and less stress. Maybe I will even find time on a weekend to explore Philly a little bit closer.

I also don't want to forget the video chat to my brother's confirmation. Congratulation again! It was nice to also see the extended family again even though its only digitally. Henning obviously had to obey his newly developed Snapchat-Addiction and capture the event.
